Most of the $1.2 billion reported missing from the failed futures brokerage MF Global has been traced to customer accounts and banks, sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Brokerages are supposed to keep customer money separate from company money. Chicago exchange owner CME Group Inc. has said MF Global deceived auditors days before the brokerage collapsed.

Three people briefed on the investigations said MF Global misused client money to repay other customers, business partners and banks who demanded cash as the firm teetered.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigations publicly.

They said details about where the money went are being kept under wraps because the publicity could hinder future prosecutions and efforts to return money to MF Global customers.

MF Global’s demise, the eighth-biggest U.S. corporate bankruptcy, is the subject of investigations by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the firm’s main regulator, and trustees trying to return money to MF Global customers and lenders, among others.

The status of the missing money was first reported late Tuesday by The New York Times.

MF Global’s collapse grabbed headlines in part because it was headed by Jon Corzine, a former Democratic governor of New Jersey, U.S. senator and CEO of Goldman Sachs.

Corzine had taken charge of the sleepy brokerage in early 2010. He wanted to transform it into a full-scale investment bank, similar to Goldman. In congressional hearings in December, he denied knowing how the money disappeared.

“I simply do not know where the money is,” he said more than a month after the company filed for bankruptcy protection Oct. 31.

The promise of separate accounts is considered a fundamental protection for people who trade futures and options, the investments that MF Global specialized in. It’s the equivalent of federal deposit insurance for bank deposits.

Using client money to meet the company’s other financial needs could violate civil securities laws and lead to criminal charges for those who authorized the transactions. Federal criminal-justice authorities have said that they are looking into the case.

Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am has launched his own car company.

The hip-hop star has designed a sports car made from Chrysler parts for IAMAUTO, which is based in the troubled Boyle Heights neighbourhood in East Los Angeles, where he grew up.

And he admits he’s trying to boost the area and give back something to locals now he is a successful artist.

Appearing on Britain’s Top Gear motoring show, he tells host Jeremy Clarkson, “(The car is) made down in the ghetto that I’m from… My whole thing was I want to make music so I can take care of my mum and move everybody in my family out together… So now that I’ve done that and now every single person in my family, from my cousins through to my uncles, to my nieces and nephews, are out of the ghetto, I wanna go back to my ghetto and build a car company.

“We all complain about underdeveloped communities, but who’s the developers in the first place? So I thought, ‘Shucks, I’m tired of complaining about the figures, why don’t I, you know, aim that finger to me and say hey, what are you doing to change the ghetto you’re from?’”

IAMAUTO is due to launch later this year.

The Ministry of Defense revealed that destroyer HMS Dauntless will sail to the South Atlantic in order to substitute frigate HMS Montrose in the coming weeks. It was claimed that the deployment was long planned but the decision is evidently put in practice when a war of words between Argentina and Britain over the disputed Falkland islands (known as Las Malvinas to Argentina) has intensified.

Tory MP Julian Brazier, who is also a defense select committee’s member, stressed that Britain’s move will send a “powerful and timely message” to the Argentina government that UK “means business when it comes to defending the Falklands.”

While repeating UK government’s colonial policy, Brazier said, “These islanders want to remain British and any oil or gas found in its waters will be British.”

The islands, located about 250 nautical miles from Argentina, have been a British colony for over 180 years. However, Argentina also claimed sovereignty as it controlled the islands before, and the two countries fought a destructive 74-day war over the islands in 1982.

As 30th anniversary of the Argentina-Britain war nears, the dispute over the territory is heating up once again. The British government is attempting to prevent any counter-move taken by Argentina to reclaim its occupied islands.

Jeremy Browne, Foreign Office minister in charge of Latin America, will travel to the islands in June to attend the anniversary of capturing the islands from Argentina. It was formerly announced that the Duke of Cambridge Prince William will also be posted to spend six weeks on the islands as an RAF search-and-rescue pilot next month. Buenos Aires described the move as being “provocative.”

The destroyer is a £1billion warship equipped with supersonic Sea Viper missiles, radar and an air defense system, being able of shooting a cricket ball moving at three times the speed of sound out of the sky.

A Navy source said that the warship could “shoot down Argentine fighters as soon as they take off from their bases,” insisting the deployment would give the Argentina government “serious pause” for thinking about their claims.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary William Hague underplayed the deployment of the warship, claiming they were routine moves, but warning “the Royal Navy packs a considerable punch.”

This is the new Richard Mille RM056.  It is a split-seconds chronograph with tourbillon with a case built entirely out of sapphire.  The whole thing.   In fact, this three piece case is actually milled from one solid block of sapphire, cut to allow for the movement placement and then reassembled as this watch.  Sapphire is indeed highly scratch-resistant, though somewhat brittle, so in theory, this watch could break if dropped.

Still, it features just an absolutely breathtaking movement – the lightest split-chrono tourbillon movement in the world – and an incredible look.

Following last week’s teaser look at the special packaging for the Year of the Dragon-edition of the Nike Kobe VII System Supreme, we can reveal a spate of new images that showcase the interior of the custom box. The sturdy slide-out box is broken up into two compartments, one for the kicks and a smaller section for a dust bag containing the shoe’s second insert.  The colors, textures and overall shape of the packaging mirror the design of the shoe, adding a spectacular dimension to an already impressive release.  (Via…)

Porsche may have just unveiled its new 2012 911 Carrera Cabriolet at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this week, but the German automaker is wasting no time before showing off its next bit of overhauled hotness, the 2013 Boxster. The mid-engine roadster won’t make its official debut until the Geneva Motor Show in March, but we’ve been given some preliminary details ahead of the new Box’s primetime unveiling.

Much like the 911, the new Boxster’s design is more evolution than revolution, and that’s a-okay with us. The redesigned roadster is extremely handsome, and most of us on the Autoblog staff think it’s the best-looking Boxster yet. We like the revised headlamps and more svelte running lamp/air intake setup, and the wider stance and longer wheelbase are nicely masked in the new design. The 2013 Boxster’s all-aluminum skin also helps the new model shed a few pounds compared to its predecessor, which will not only make it that much more engaging out on the road, but also improve fuel economy.

But really, the Boxster is all about performance, and under the hood behind the seats are two flat-six engines with direct injection, thermal management and start/stop functionality. The base Boxster uses a 2.7-liter flat six, good for 265 horsepower (10 hp more than its predecessor) while the Boxster S is powered by a 3.4-liter six that produces 315 hp (an increase of 5 hp versus the 2012 model). The standard Boxster will run to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, while the Boxster S will do the same jaunt in just 4.7 seconds. A six-speed manual gearbox (what, no seven-speed?) is also available with either engine. Porsche will offer a Sport Chrono package that further enhances performance, adding things like dynamic transmission mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV).

Look for the 2013 Boxster to hit United States showrooms this summer, priced from $49,500 for the base car or $60,900 for the Boxster S (not including $950 for destination).  (Via…)
